Understanding one’s heritage in terms of origin is imperative as it connects back to its roots. A short story about my cultural heritage helped me appreciate my roots and how my family generation has grown. On my father’s family side, I was told about my great British grandfather, who was in the military during the First World War. He fell in love and married an Asian woman in 1920, later giving birth to five sons in which my grandfather was the lastborn. My grandfather lived his years in Asia and worked as an Engineer in China. He is considered a traveller who lived to visit new places. In 1960, my British-Asian grandfather moved from England, where he married an Englishwoman who is my grandmother. My father is one of the three children gotten in this union, having two sisters and him as the only son. My mother’s side is fascinating as they are a non-mixture of races or ethnicity since they are all Asians. My mother comes from a large family of seven (five brothers and two sisters, including her). In this family have they are strictly Hindu and very religious. My roots in British- Asian are very intriguing, especially the food culture and diversity in the cultural aspect.

In my nuclear family, there are family traditions and occasions that were treasures alot; for instance, my nuclear family rituals are snow sculptures during winter, which is a fun Asian culture. We would share presents during birthdays, and my dad treats us with a traditional British Shepherd Pie. These ceremonies and activities are fundamental in making my family more cohesive. Cultural foods from Asian are typical delicacy, such as Chicken Rotisserie, Tomato salad, and traditional dumplings. I admire the rich culture and the exotic cuisine that Asians are engaged in. In comparison to British foods, it is more like American, but one unique factor is love for cheese, which my grandfather as well my father loves.

Heath prevention and maintenance in my British-Asian roots are unique as there is a disease like asthma and high blood pressure evident in my mother’s lineage. Diseases like cancer have been a terminal condition that has affected my father’s lineage as some of my relatives are battling with the illness. There are health remedies and exercises that my family and extended members apply, for example, yoga training and therapeutic meditation. Health beliefs and myths are associated with my Asian heritage as they are very superstitious compared to my British roots, who were Christians.

My self-discovery and cultural understanding of my family have helped me live a healthier life as I have known diseases and donations that affect my family tree.
